To address the challenge of building smart city solution for small and mid-sized cities, the SCENE project, funded by the European Commission, develops an open, mobile, IoT platform based on vehicular network.
In 1950, 29% of the world population lived in cities. In 2040, this ratio is expected to reach 65%, with 1,3 million people moving into cities each week.
With the digital revolution and the combination of low power sensors, wireless networks and web/mobile-based applications, Smart Cities are arising.
But there are several major economic barriers to the widespread adoption of smart city services. Among them: large infrastructure expenditures and unpreparedness of local public institutions to handle new approaches to city governance.
To address the challenge of inventing smart city solutions suitable to small and mid-sized cities, 5 European organizations have launched the SCENE project.
“Smart city initiatives tend to be only affordable for large cities and conducted by a few large infrastructure installers. Citizens of small cities are thus cut off from smart city benefits – including lower pollution, safer streets and more efficient services. SCENE will finally bring smart city for all” says Filipe Custodio, project coordinator (VisionWare).
The SCENE platform will enclose an integrated security system for both IoT based data collection as well as digital content delivery for passengers and citizens.
Based on a novel concept of mobile IoT smart city platform, SCENE has two major benefits:
- Mobility: By disrupting the assumption that network coverage needs to be static, SCENE offers a mobile infrastructure that can be embedded in buses, taxis or the metro, thus relying on vehicular networks rather than a fixed infrastructure.
- Oppenness: the SCENE platform is to be open to smart city service providers that will use it as an IoT platform for collecting their citywide-deployed sensors without investing on their own infrastructure.
“Our edge-computing technology allows to process IoT sensors data directly in the nearby of the sensors, which brings huge potentialities in an upcoming 5G environment. Local SMEs and start-ups will be fostered to develop new services and solutions”, says project technical manager Jean-Charles Point (JCP-Connect).
With a two-year duration, the project has a 3 million Euro budget and is funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 program.
